There are approximately 37,000 people who are homeless in New South Wales alone in 2021. The ways to homelessness are diverse and complex, as are the ways out.

Will2Live is developing a café and program centre in Redfern which will provide pathways to employment for those who are homeless, long-term unemployed or living below the poverty line.

The centre will also be home to commercial grade kitchen facilities in which Will2Live staff and volunteers will produced hundreds of meals each day for the homeless and food insecure.

Our employment pathways program taking place at the centre is called HIRING OPPORTUNITIES & MEANINGFUL ADVANCEMENT (HOMA) and will include case management, training, certification, and employment.

The HOMA Program

HOMA is Will2Live’s employment pathway for the long term unemployed, the homeless and those on or below the poverty line in Sydney, to train, employ and transition them into mainstream employment over a period of up to 12 months.

Four people are taken into the program every 3 months, making the total yearly intake 16 people.

HOMA creates person-centred employment pathways that allow marginalised people to build their confidence and self-esteem, it also helps them to become work-ready in the practical and supportive workplaces of its social enterprises. They will then transition into meaningful jobs within a network of supportive mainstream employers. The program consists of three steps:

STEP 1. Holistic case management to address individual barriers to employment, engaging in training and earning career certifications.

STEP 2. The participants step into our social enterprises and begin practical, on-the-job, employment skills training. They progress at their own pace from trainee positions into genuine roles.

STEP 3. When our participants are ‘employment ready’ they transition into aligned roles within a network of supportive mainstream companies. The person and mainstream employer are provided with support during the first few months of the role.

The Space

• Located on Botany Rd in Redfern, the not-for-profit café and commercial kitchen will be the cornerstone of the facility, providing skills training and jobs for the homeless to kickstart their journey back into the workforce.
• Corporate volunteer days can also be hosted in the on-site commercial kitchen which has the capacity to produce hundreds of meals on a daily basis.
• The premises will also offer access to washing machines, showers, clean clothes, and change rooms, providing a safe space for the homeless to freshen up and do their laundry.
• The café will be open to the public 7-days-a-week and all profits will go back into the HOMA program.
